Olympus Silicone Immersion Oil is a high-performance immersion medium engineered for live-cell, thick-tissue, and deep-sample imaging using silicone-immersion microscope objectives. Unlike standard immersion oils — which have a refractive index of approximately 1.515, closely matched to glass but not to biological tissue — silicone oil has a refractive index of approximately 1.406, which is much closer to the refractive index of cytoplasm and biological membranes. This match significantly reduces spherical aberration when imaging deeper into specimens, preserving resolution and signal intensity at depths where standard oil immersion would produce increasingly degraded images. The silicone formulation is non-evaporative and thermally stable, making it ideal for extended time-lapse experiments and live-cell imaging at physiological temperatures (37°C) where water-based media would evaporate and standard oils would shift viscosity. Compatible with Olympus silicone-immersion objectives including the UPLSAPO 20x Si, 30x Si, 40x Si, and 60x Si series. Supplied in a 30cc bottle, catalog no. Z-81114 / part no. N4190800.
