Product Overview

The Olympus U-GAN is a specialized slider combining an analyzer and a first-order red (full-wave) compensator plate, designed specifically for gout and synovial fluid crystal analysis. In compensated polarized light microscopy, the wave plate introduces a known retardation that allows differentiation of crystal types by their color and sign of birefringence. Monosodium urate crystals (gout) appear yellow when parallel to the slow axis and blue when perpendicular, while calcium pyrophosphate crystals (pseudogout) show the opposite pattern. This color-coded identification is the clinical standard for crystal arthropathy diagnosis in rheumatology and pathology laboratories.
