The Olympus BH2-UMA is a universal reflected light illuminator (metallograph attachment) for Olympus BH2 series upright microscopes, providing brightfield (BF), darkfield (DF), and polarized (POL) reflected light illumination modes for comprehensive opaque specimen analysis. In reflected light microscopy, the illumination is delivered through the objective onto the specimen surface and reflected back up through the same objective to the observer — making it the standard approach for metallography, materials science, and mineralogy where specimens are opaque and cannot be observed in transmitted light. The BH2-UMA’s universal design supports all three primary reflected light contrast modes: brightfield for standard surface observation, darkfield for high-contrast detection of surface defects and grain boundaries, and polarized light for revealing anisotropic features, grain orientation, and birefringent phases in metals, alloys, and ore minerals. The BH2-UMA accepts polarizing accessories including the UPO-NIC rotatable polarizer for full reflected light POL capability.
