The Nikon MBL12000 oil darkfield condenser is a high-numerical aperture oil immersion condenser designed to produce darkfield illumination on Nikon Eclipse series upright microscopes. In darkfield microscopy, the condenser directs light at oblique angles so that only light scattered by the specimen reaches the objective — producing bright, luminous images of specimen features against a completely dark background. This technique is particularly powerful for imaging unstained, transparent, or living specimens that produce little contrast in brightfield, including bacteria, spirochetes, blood cells, colloidal particles, and fine cellular structures. The oil immersion design (NA 1.20–1.43) is required for darkfield imaging with high-NA objectives (typically 40x–100x oil immersion), where the condenser NA must exceed the objective NA to maintain the darkfield condition. Immersion oil is applied between the condenser top lens and the underside of the slide to achieve the full NA range. The MBL12000 fits Nikon Eclipse series upright microscope stands and is supplied as a genuine Nikon OEM component in new condition.
